What do the bulky tyre dimensions of electric scooters mean?

The tyre dimensions of electric scooter tyres can be a headache, even for experienced users. All the measurements look different and it is difficult to know which tyres to choose for your electric scooter.

Not sure what the numbers on the tyre mean? How do I choose the right tyre for my scooter? What are the right tyre dimensions for your electric scooter?

The Riedis.LT team is here to help.

With a few examples and explanations, we will try to give you an overview of the different tyre dimensions used by manufacturers.

The most important parameters to look out for are:

1. Tyre outer diameter / diameter - what size is this tyre?

2. Tyre width - how wide is this tyre?

3. Tyre inner diameter - what diameter engine will this tyre fit?

First example

90/65-6.5

90 - This number indicates the width of the tyre. This number is written in millimetres.

65 - This number is a percentage and represents the height of the tyre profile. In this case 65% of 90 mm is 58.5 mm. This means that our tyre height (the distance from the rim to the top of the tyre) is 58.5 mm or 5.85 cm.

6.5 - This number indicates the diameter of the rim / diameter on which the tyre is suitable for measurement (inner diameter of the tyre) This number is expressed in inches. 1 inch = 2.54 cm. In this case, this tyre will fit a 6.5 in (16.51 cm) diameter engine.

ATTENTION

This method of dimensioning does not provide information on the OUTSIDE diameter of the tyre. With this method of dimensioning the outer diameter can be calculated:

Rim diameter (Inner diameter of the tyre) cm + 2 x tyre profile height ➡️16.51 cm + 2 x 5.85 cm = 28.21 cm = 11.1 in

This tyre can be called an 11 inch tyre in everyday language.

Second Example

Sometimes manufacturers use dimensions with 2 digits. Sometimes the manufacturer gives the dimensions in inches, sometimes in millimetres - so don't be alarmed if you see different numbers.

10x3 or 255x80

10x3 is an expression in inches

255x80 - in millimetres

10 in or 255 mm - tyre outer diameter / diameter

3 in or 80 mm - tyre width

ATTENTION

This method of dimensioning does not give information on the INTERNAL diameter of the tyre, but in most cases a tyre with a diameter of 10 inches will fit a 6 inch engine. There are some exceptions for other tyres.

Ideally these dimensions should be written as 10x3-6 or 255x80-6

ATTENTION

This method of dimensioning does not give information on the INTERNAL diameter of the tyre, but in most cases 10" diameter tyres will fit a 6" engine. There are some exceptions and other tyres are available.

Ideally these dimensions should be written as 10x3-6 or 255x80-6
